The Blackcoat's Daughter (2017)

An almost empty boarding school over a winter break gives small gestures a disquieting amount of space. Osgood Perkins makes a telephone call, a pause at a doorway or a walk towards the boiler room feel charged with expectation. A handful of jolts and some brutal violence interrupt the cold atmosphere. The stronger pull is the sense that isolation might make an alarming presence feel welcome; watch attentively, since the narrative leaves you to join its strands.
