The Innocents (1961)
Movie
Released
A governess starts finding troubling meanings in her two young charges' games and silences. Jack Clayton gives you time to notice a distant figure or an unsettling stillness, including in broad daylight, then makes certainty harder to recover. A few abrupt moments break through, but the real trap is sustained scrutiny: are you seeing evidence, or learning to share the governess's interpretation? Its candlelit widescreen images reward looking without rushing to solve them.
