The Haunting (1963)
Movie
Released
Heavy pounding and pressure on a bedroom door make Hill House feel active without providing a creature to explain it. Robert Wise keeps the visitors' reactions and the building's skewed spaces in a tense relationship, so looking harder offers no dependable answer. The knocks can be loud and startling, but they sustain an unseen presence rather than repeatedly clearing the tension. Eleanor's desperate wish to belong makes the house's attention especially troubling.
