The Vanishing (1988)
Movie
Released
A woman disappears from a busy service station in daylight, and her partner cannot stop searching for an answer. The Dutch-French original makes routine preparation and ordinary social behaviour deeply frightening, drawing terror from the possible uses of patience rather than quick shocks. Its inexorable movement towards knowledge is the attraction. Go in without reading the ending, and expect a bleak psychological thriller whose eventual impact is anything but reassuring.
