The Lighthouse (2019)

The foghorn does not wait politely for a scare: it keeps pressing on two keepers who cannot escape one another. Boxy black-and-white framing, repeating chores and meals that turn into power struggles make the isolation feel bodily. There are abrupt visions and ugly violence, but sustained sensory pressure does most of the work. Its grotesque humour and dense seafaring speech suit a more unruly evening than the phrase 'slow horror' might suggest.
