Against the 1976 Streisand-Kristofferson version, the 2018 film's live-performance scenes give discovery a more convincing physical charge. Gaga's concentration before she sings and Cooper's rough, watchful stillness make attraction feel bound up with the risk of being heard. Earlier versions have pleasures of their own, especially the 1954 musical. This comparison favours the later rock-era treatment for its intimate stage chemistry, while recognising that addiction, destructive behaviour and suicide make the romance painful.
