The 1951 film's creature threatens a resourceful group; Carpenter's 1982 version makes the group's own bodies the uncertain territory. Rob Bottin's grotesque effects give each test of trust a frightening physical basis. Its confined Antarctic outpost turns cooperation into a dwindling resource. This older exception wins through paranoia, with emphatic body horror rather than the earlier film's brisk camaraderie.
