Michael Fassbender's David listens with immaculate courtesy while his tiny head movements and borrowed mannerisms keep raising questions about what that courtesy means. The humans' convenient decisions often make the expedition harder to believe; David's controlled curiosity makes it worth following. Noomi Rapace also does formidable physical work, but Fassbender gives the film its most unsettling continuity.
