Whisper of the Heart (1995)

Shizuku's attempt to write a story makes creative ambition look like untidy labour rather than a certificate of specialness. The fatigue, uneven first efforts and need to show someone unfinished work may register more clearly after years of postponing your own project. Its adolescent romance is sweet, but the generous adult response to a beginner's limitations is the detail to treasure. A small-scale film that respects practice.
