Chihiro must learn names, routines and alliances in a workplace whose rules nobody explains kindly. The bathhouse can become an especially vivid adult lens on the story, without reducing its creatures to a set of symbols. Her competence grows through attention and care rather than domination. The celebrated train journey also allows uncertainty to remain unresolved for a while, a rare pleasure in such an eventful fantasy.
