Best Movies of 2014

A ranking across a year rich in precise thrillers, formally adventurous drama, animated invention and uncomfortable comedy. The order favours complete films whose direction and performances make their ideas tangible, rather than awards or box-office success alone. Start with The Grand Budapest Hotel for elaborate comic storytelling, Pride for an inviting ensemble or Two Days, One Night for concentrated drama. Years follow first public screenings, including festivals: It Follows and The Duke of Burgundy qualify through 2014 premieres despite wider releases in 2015. The notes distinguish demanding experiments and severe material from more accessible choices.
