Brendan Fraser's practical exasperation and Rachel Weisz's curiosity make the creature spectacle feel like a shared expedition. Its critical reception was mixed, so the defence need not pretend that every joke lands or that the cultural shorthand is harmless. The reason to return is the unusually easy chemistry between comedy, romance and a monster that still gets to be threatening.
