Armin Mueller-Stahl's Semyon makes hospitality and authority look disturbingly compatible. In the restaurant setting, the reassuring social manner matters because it offers a surface other people are expected to accept. Eastern Promises lets his control work through family obligation and withheld information as much as direct force. Choose it for a crime patriarch whose courtesy is part of the pressure, within a film involving sexual exploitation and exceptionally graphic physical violence.
