Paul Newman's John Rooney gives paternal affection a limit that the people depending on him cannot safely ignore. Daniel Craig's resentful Connor makes that household hierarchy unstable from another direction. Road to Perdition is worth choosing for the collision between family feeling and criminal responsibility, with the actors making loyalties legible in small exchanges. Its beautifully controlled images do not soften the violence that closes around the fathers and sons.
