Dennis Hopper's Frank Booth brings a frightening instability to the spaces Jeffrey imagines he can investigate and then leave. His eruptions are important, but so is the way other people adjust themselves around the possibility of another one. Blue Velvet makes that atmosphere part of its vision of suburban curiosity. This earlier exception is a disturbing adult nightmare, with sexual violence and degradation; its strange beauty offers no guarantee of emotional distance.
