Robert Mitchum lets preacher Harry Powell's easy charm and singing voice travel into places where children are trying to hide. Charles Laughton's shadowed compositions give his approach the force of a folk-tale threat, while the social respect attached to his costume makes the danger painfully human. The Night of the Hunter is the older discovery to choose for visual storytelling. Its menace depends on adults mistaking an appearance of moral authority for actual care.
