Touch of Evil (1958)
Movie

Orson Welles makes police captain Hank Quinlan seem to carry an entire history of power into each room. His physical bulk and weary certainty turn an argument about evidence into an argument about who is permitted to define the truth. Touch of Evil earns its place through that institutional threat rather than a hidden-mastermind reveal. The border-town atmosphere is feverish and morally tangled, with no promise that the officials will be safer company than the suspects.
