John Huston's Noah Cross is disturbing through his assumption that other people's objections will eventually be dealt with. The relaxed delivery makes wealth feel like control over the terms of a conversation, not simply an impressive address. Chinatown is the choice for a villain whose power extends beyond the detective's immediate case. Its revelations are best discovered directly, with sexual abuse and an exceptionally bleak view of what an investigation can achieve.
