The Ascent (1977)
Movie
Released
Two Soviet partisans searching for supplies enter a story where bodily weakness and coercion test what loyalty can mean. Larisa Shepitko's close attention to faces prevents the moral questions becoming a simple diagram. The older exception is spare, severe and spiritually charged, with the occupation felt through what frightened people can be made to do.
