Rian Johnson transfers hardboiled dialogue and investigative loyalties into a school without continually apologising for the mismatch. Joseph Gordon-Levitt's serious concentration gives the conceit a working centre. The later Knives Out films take a more expansive comic route, but the debut already shows confidence in how a mystery teaches its audience to listen.
