Richard Kelly makes suburban routine, adolescent fear and an unstable science-fiction premise feel emotionally connected even when the mechanics remain slippery. Jake Gyllenhaal anchors that confidence. Later films are divisive, which makes this a useful reminder that a debut can announce a singular talent without guaranteeing an equally smooth subsequent reception.
