The investigation's empty spaces, strange framing and Harker's incomplete understanding create a powerful sense of danger. The explanation of the dolls and her mother's role then gives much of that dread a fairly explicit supernatural mechanism. Satanic influence was always part of the film; the disappointment is how a lengthy causal account replaces the earlier, more unnerving work of looking.
