A sinister storybook enters a household already strained by sleeplessness, grief and a child's difficult behaviour. Jennifer Kent makes the relationship between mother and son frightening before the creature has explained anything about itself. Essie Davis's exhaustion gives the shadowy design an emotional source of pressure. Pick it for domestic horror in which the monster cannot be separated neatly from the family's pain; it offers little of the relief of an external enemy.
