Hades (2020)
8.9/10on IGDB
Released
The House of Hades turns an unsuccessful escape into a chance to check on a family argument, a friendship or a contractor's next improvement. Talk to the residents before rushing out again, and spend permanent resources on the Mirror of Night or changes around the house. Its characters respond to many kinds of progress, so the home becomes part of the story rather than a separate upgrade screen. Major relationship resolutions still take repeated attempts and sometimes successful clears; one finished run does not exhaust the household.

Hades II (2025)
8.9/10on IGDB
Released
The Crossroads feels like a resistance camp gradually becoming somewhere Melinoe belongs. Incantations open facilities and useful options, while conversation, gifts and shared activities develop relationships around the nightly expeditions. The completed game also lets you decorate the camp through its renewal project. Use the updated full release: later patches add character conclusions and continuing gift scenes after bonds are forged. Expect substantial repeated combat between story milestones, especially when following both routes, rather than a new camp event after every failure.

Children of Morta (2019)
7.1/10on IGDB
Released
Choose Story mode for the Bergsons' house, where small domestic scenes make the people behind the weapons matter. Returning from a dungeon can advance a family story, unlock another playable relative or give you a reason to improve everyone through shared upgrades. Rotate characters instead of treating one favourite as the whole family; their growth supports the group. The separate Family Trials mode has a different structure and is not the recommendation here. Repeated dungeon attempts remain necessary, but the house gives them an emotional destination.

Cult of the Lamb (2022)
8.0/10on IGDB
Released
Your settlement is a substantial second job: feed followers, improve buildings, manage faith and decide what kind of leader the flock will tolerate. Crusades bring resources and recruits back into that continuing community, while follower traits and requests create small stories around the practical work. The base game provides this loop without requiring a paid expansion. This is dark cult-management comedy rather than an entirely comforting refuge; illness, dissent and death can make returning urgent. Choose it when looking after the base sounds as appealing as fighting through the next dungeon.

Dreamscaper (2020)
7.0/10on IGDB
Released
Cassidy wakes from dangerous dreams into Redhaven, where meeting people and building friendships changes the next night as well as her waking life. Spend time on conversations and relationships instead of treating daytime as a quick preparation menu. Those connections provide permanent benefits, giving another attempt a purpose beyond finding stronger dream equipment. The return is to a small town rather than a base you freely construct. It is a particularly good fit for character-focused play, provided you are comfortable revisiting dream environments and a story concerned with painful emotions.

Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault (2026)
Released
Tresna gives Will's expeditions a practical social purpose: stock a shop, read customers, improve the business and reinvest in the town where the displaced merchant has landed. Furniture and shop customisation make the return feel increasingly yours, while the surrounding cast connects the trade loop to a larger story. The full release includes that story's conclusion; choose it rather than assuming the older Early Access version is the finished adventure. Expect inventory sorting, pricing and repeated resource trips between major changes. Shopkeeping is a central activity, not a brief reward screen.

Moonlighter (2018)
7.1/10on IGDB
Released
For a smaller-scale version of the merchant's life, return to Rynoka with dungeon stock and open Will's shop. Funding new local businesses gives the village useful new faces and services, while shop improvements turn a modest trading space into a visible record of progress. Neighbours matter chiefly through that commercial restoration and equipment support, rather than through Hades-like relationship scenes. Choose it for the pleasure of making a town function better through your sales, with repeated dungeons and pricing experiments supplying the money.

Rogue Legacy 2 (2022)
7.7/10on IGDB
Released
Every dead heir leaves the next one a developing manor and access to a growing set of services. Spend inherited gold on the estate, return to the docks' familiar helpers and follow the conversations that give them lives beyond their upgrade functions. Persistent abilities make later expeditions feel different, while the lineage gives failure a continuing place in the fiction. This is a long progression game: deeper lore and relationship payoffs extend beyond a single clear, and building the manor can involve many attempts through familiar early areas.

The Rogue Prince of Persia (2025)
8.0/10on IGDB
Released
The Oasis gathers people rescued during the Prince's repeated efforts to save Persia, so checking the camp means meeting the practical consequences of an expedition. Residents offer services such as unlocks, challenges and outfits alongside the developing story. Choose the completed release for the full campaign. Its acrobatic action is the main attraction, and camp conversations can repeat before the next condition is met; approach the refuge as a growing support network rather than expecting the conversational density of Hades. Following a specific rescue or clue gives the next run direction.

Astral Ascent (2023)
9.0/10on IGDB
Released
The Garden is a prison, but its residents make returning less like being sent back to a menu. Talk to the other heroes and helpers, sit with the developing dialogue, and use permanent progression to prepare another escape attempt. Character histories and the reasons for the conflict emerge across repeated runs. Start with the base game's cast rather than buying extra heroes solely for more conversation. This is still a demanding spell-combination action game, so meaningful story progress is spread through combat achievements and repeated visits, not a freely scheduled social simulation.

Backpack Hero (2023)
7.0/10on IGDB
Released
Select Story Mode to rebuild Haversack Hill; standalone runs leave out the continuing village that earns it a place here. Resources support buildings, research and new residents, which in turn open heroes, quests and challenges. The result is a visible reason to bring useful materials home even when a particular inventory experiment fails. Combat is turn-based and built around arranging items in a backpack, making this the quieter alternative to the action games above. Settlement work can require repeated collection, so enjoy the organising as well as the unveiling.

UnderMine (2020)
6.7/10on IGDB
Released
Rescuing someone underground changes who is waiting at the mine's hub, where new helpers offer persistent upgrades and reveal more of Delvemore's problems. Gold gathered by one peasant improves the prospects of those who follow, turning a disposable adventurer into part of a continuing operation. Choose the original UnderMine for this particular rescue-and-return structure. The base is compact and service-led, rather than a large town to decorate, but seeing it acquire people gives exploration another purpose. Repeated early-floor visits are part of earning its permanent improvements.

Have a Nice Death (2023)
7.8/10on IGDB
Released
Death Inc. makes an office lobby into a recurring social space, with Pump Quinn and the other employees supplying gossip around your attempts to restore order. Performance reviews and earned resources unlock equipment and options for later runs, while the workplace story develops through further progress. This is a home base in the institutional sense: you are returning to an absurdly familiar job, not furnishing a cosy house. Expect repeated banter and demanding combat between larger narrative developments. Pick it for the pleasure of checking what the troublesome staff have done next.

Sparklite (2019)
6.0/10on IGDB
Released
Ada's returns to the Refuge support the people sheltering from the Baron's machines. Spend gathered Sparklite on the settlement's facilities and your equipment, then head back into the rearranged world with a more capable setup. Befriending locals and helping the Refuge grow gives the loop a constructive centre. Its character work is lighter than the family stories near the top of this list; the satisfaction is chiefly seeing a practical haven improve. Repeated resource gathering is part of that development, so choose it when incremental rebuilding is enough motivation.

Rogue Heroes: Ruins of Tasos (2021)
7.1/10on IGDB
Released
Intori develops through the buildings you fund between dungeon attempts, from weapons services to a fishery. Each addition makes returning useful and gives your next expedition a concrete purchase to work towards. This is the construction-led choice: the town's residents and amenities provide a sense of place, while the main emphasis remains Zelda-like tools, combat and procedural dungeons. It is less about elaborate relationship arcs than making a settlement capable of supporting its heroes. Play alone or with friends, and expect to revisit dungeons to finance the improvements.
