Harper's fear of her family's judgement is carefully established, and her eventual public honesty and apology are meaningful starts. Abby has nevertheless endured repeated humiliation, including Harper's denial of their relationship. The year-later engagement allows time for repair, but largely skips showing it. The happy ending therefore depends on accepting a changed relationship in the gap, when Abby's experience has made the rebuilding of trust the central question.
