Ikaruga (2001)
8.8/10on IGDB
Released
Switch polarity to absorb bullets matching your ship's colour, then spend that stored energy on homing lasers. The useful question becomes which stream to enter, not simply which gap to flee towards. Changing colour also changes which shots are dangerous, so an apparently safe position can become fatal at the wrong switch. Enemy bodies and solid scenery are not made harmless by matching polarity. Choose the current PC or console release for this deliberately binary, highly readable defensive puzzle.

RefleX (2008)
7.0/10on IGDB
Released
RefleX makes recovery a decision: shield energy returns only while you are neither shooting nor shielding. The same gauge also affects the strength of ordinary fire, so draining it weakens your next attack as well as removing protection. Hold the shield to reflect optical shots and lasers, but dodge missiles, ramming and other physical threats. Pick this PC shooter if you want defence to change when you stop attacking, rather than merely adding another emergency button.

Drainus (2022)
8.0/10on IGDB
Released
Hold the Reflector to absorb energy fire, then release it to turn the stored attack back on the enemy. Its limited guard meter makes the length of that hold important: a greedy absorption can leave you exposed when the next threat arrives. Physical attacks and obstacles still demand movement, so recognising what can be absorbed is part of piloting. It is a good choice when you want an immediate defensive action whose offensive payoff encourages you to keep engaging.

Eschatos (2011)
7.0/10on IGDB
Released
A front-facing shield replaces your shot while active, creating a direct choice between destroying an enemy and intercepting its fire. It drains a visible meter, does not protect you from every direction, and therefore rewards deliberate positioning rather than hiding indefinitely. Wide and concentrated shots give you different ways to remove the threat before the next shield use. Choose Original mode first if you want to examine that clean three-tool relationship before Advanced adds its extra power-up rules.

Radiant Silvergun (2011)
Released
The ordinary Radiant Sword absorbs pink bullets to fill the Hyper Sword gauge; it is not a universal shield against every colour or collision. A full gauge unlocks the separate Hyper Sword attack, whose brief invulnerability gives you a much stronger escape tool. That distinction makes choosing a collectible bullet different from choosing a genuinely safe moment to pass through danger. The modern PC release keeps these tools alongside the other weapons, so give the sword a convenient control binding.

Giga Wing (1999)
6.2/10on IGDB
Released
Hold the shot control when Reflect Force is ready to send an approaching field of bullets back towards its source. Its activation and recharge rhythm asks you to prepare for a dangerous wave, then survive the gap before the next field. You are protected during the active reflection, not permanently because the tool exists. The arcade game is available through Capcom Arcade Stadium. Choose it for planned reversals of overwhelming fire, with movement still important between those reversals.

G-Darius HD (2021)
Released
A captured enemy becomes a companion whose behaviour can provide extra fire or a useful shield. Keeping it alive protects one plan; spending it as a bomb or Alpha Beam clears the way for another, and a careless wait can let it be destroyed before either payoff. G-Darius HD makes that older capture system convenient to revisit. Start with its original arcade rules and learn which enemies are worth taking, rather than treating every capture as an interchangeable power-up.

Psyvariar Delta (2018)
9.0/10on IGDB
Released
Close passes earn experience, and levelling up grants a short period of invulnerability. That lets you deliberately enter a dangerous formation while protected and build towards another level, turning defence into an active route through the bullets. Delta's display shows the remaining invincible time and experience, making the boundary worth watching rather than guessing. The protection expires: being close to a bullet is not itself safety. Choose this when timed commitment sounds more interesting than maintaining a shield stock.

Graze Counter GM (2023)
Released
Graze nearby bullets to prepare a Counter, use its beam to clear danger, then gather the resulting stars towards Break. In GM, Break supplies a limited period of invulnerability as well as stronger firepower, so a well-prepared offensive sequence can become your escape route. You still need to rebuild those resources between bursts. Choose it for a defensive rhythm that rewards approaching manageable danger; the separate Auto Shield skill is a simpler buffer rather than the whole system.

Rolling Gunner + Over Power (2021)
Released
Use the Over Power rules included in this package: the rolling gun can intercept bullets, a buster beam destroys incoming fire, and a plasma shield recovers automatically. Positioning the auxiliary gun therefore becomes part of keeping a safe route open while attacking. These are substantial changes from the base game's bomb-based defence, not just a harder difficulty setting. Choose it if you want several active defensive tools together; a separate Switch Over Power download requires the original game.

Akai Katana Shin (2022)
Released
This modern package contains distinct rules, so begin by separating them. In the original Akai Katana, the limited-energy Guardian form can repel fire while you are not holding the focused attack; choosing that stronger shot gives up the protection. Shin instead makes the form vulnerable and puts bullet cancellation into its Hagane and katana projectiles. That is an unusually revealing comparison between defence by restraint and defence by planned attacks. Do not transfer one version's safety assumptions to another.

Espgaluda II (2021)
Released
Awakening spends gems to slow the world and make threatening fire easier to read. Destroying the right enemies then removes their associated bullets, creating a reason to attack during that breathing room rather than simply wait. Keep watching the gem stock: remaining transformed after it empties can speed bullets up instead. The Switch release includes the original-style rules alongside substantial alternatives. Learn those basic resource limits before switching to Black Label or other arrangements.

Caladrius Blaze (2014)
7.1/10on IGDB
Released
Each character has attack, support and defensive Element Shots with their own gauges. In Evolution mode, keeping all three above half allows a combined Evolution attack that clears incoming fire, but leaves the gauges empty afterwards. Spending protection now can therefore delay a larger escape tool later. Choose it for comparing a small defensive use with an all-in reset, keeping the selected mode consistent. Its sexualised damage illustrations are a conspicuous part of the presentation.

R-Type Delta: HD Boosted (2025)
Released
The invulnerable Force pod can intercept fire while your own craft remains exposed. Keeping it attached for cover or sending it forward to damage enemies changes how you approach the same corridor. Blocking shots and dealing damage with the Force builds Dose, eventually enabling a Delta Weapon burst. It is a defensive system that asks you to arrange the tool before the threat, rather than hold an all-purpose guard. Choose the modern HD Boosted release for this version of Delta.

Dariusburst: Chronicle Saviours (2015)
8.0/10on IGDB
Released
With Legend Silver Hawk, set a Fixed Burst beam to intercept incoming shots, then use the main-shot control to lock or release its direction. The beam drains Burst energy, but dissipating fire and attacking enemies can help replenish the gauge, encouraging an active defensive position. A precisely timed Burst Counter is a separate way to answer an enemy beam. Choose Chronicle Saviours and learn one craft first: Next, Assault, Gaiden and other ships do not all share Legend's tools.
