Judgment Night (1993)

Pairing rap acts with rock bands gives the soundtrack a governing idea stronger than the film's urban pursuit. Helmet and House of Pain's Just Another Victim brings blunt force; Sonic Youth and Cypress Hill's I Love You Mary Jane finds a looser, stranger groove. The artists meet within the tracks rather than merely taking turns on a compilation. Stephen Hopkins's thriller supplies night-time danger, but the record creates the more interesting friction. A good starting point when you want collaboration to produce something neither participant would make alone.
