Gorr's daughter dies while the god he worships enjoys abundance and mocks his suffering. The film later gives divine indifference a larger stage, so his accusation has support beyond personal bitterness. Kidnapping children and seeking the extinction of all gods make grief a licence for indiscriminate harm. His eventual choice to restore his daughter rather than complete the slaughter recognises a need that revenge had displaced.
